Brighton and Hove Libraries are about to get a lot spookier in July, firstly, The Children’s Summer Reading Challenge launches at every library across the city on Saturday 13th July, the aim is to encourage children aged 4 – 11 to read six books during the summer holidays, this years theme is Creepy House, a spine-tingling adventure where they can join our young adventurers Tilda, Saeed, Ollie, Rhys, Zoe, Liv, and Baskerville the dog as they explore the secrets of Creepy House and meet the hair-raising residents, including, Wurzel Wendy, Monsieur Goulash, The Hot House Horror, Twilight Tim, Grandma Hyde, Headless Harry, Skeleton Family Robinson, Wolf kid, Bunny Boy, Spookitty and Frankenmouse.
This theme has been chosen to appeal to a wide age range, to both genders and to tap into children’s enjoyment of being spine-tingly thrilled without being scared!
The artist Chris Riddell is the creepy house illustrator, his style and humour is a perfect match for Creepy House. Chris has twice-won the Kate Greenaway medal and many adults will also know his work from his weekly political cartoon in the Observer newspaper. Children can discover more about Chris Riddell in the new “Meet the Illustrator” activity-book that has also been designed to complement the Arts Award scheme.
There is also a website to visit, http://summerreadingchallenge.org.uk/
This offers a range of activities, plus hidden “treats” for children who enter the “unlock” codes on the sticker sheets. These include video clips and messages from authors and illustrators supporting the challenge….. Spine tingling stuff!
